If you’re flying into Playa del Carmen, you’ll land at Cancún International Airport (CUN), located about 55 km (34 miles) from Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen is one of the most popular destinations in the Riviera Maya, and travelers often wonder: What’s the easiest way to get there? This guide covers all your options — from budget-friendly buses to private transfers — with real prices, schedules, travel time estimates, and insider tips so you can make the best choice for your trip.
🙏 Huge thanks to my friend Vix for helping me research and refine this guide — your insights made it so much more thorough and useful!

If flying into the FBO (where private planes arrive), there are NO taxis. Transportation must be arranged in advance if you want to be picked up at the FBO, or they offer a complimentary transfer service from the FBO to the main terminals.
👉 Disclaimer: Prices in Mexico can change due to inflation, fuel prices, or regulation updates. Always double-check current fares before traveling.

Getting From Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen
1. ADO Airport Bus (Most Affordable Option)
Why take the ADO bus?
Cheapest realistic door-to-town option that’s comfortable, air-conditioned and luggage-friendly.
Drops you at the main ADO stations in Playa (5th Ave Turística), which is centrally located.
Before you land — prep checklist
Have some pesos (MXN) for small purchases — ADO kiosks accept cards, but sometimes machines fail. Small bills are useful; USD is sometimes accepted but change will be in MXN.
Install the ADO app / bookmark ADO website so you can buy and show e-tickets on your phone. The ADO app also lets you pay with PayPal, which works reliably. https://www.ado.com.mx/
Check if your hotel/Airbnb is close. Walking with luggage along 5th Ave is safe but can be crowded — if you arrive late at night or have heavy bags, a taxi is worth it. If you’re staying farther inland, budget for a short taxi or rideshare from the station.
Your flight could be delayed — consider buying once you arrive rather than locking in a specific minute. ADO will usually reissue if you explain an inbound flight delay at their counter.
Small note: it’s appreciated to tip porters for the ADO bus — they may not be paid.
ADO Aeropuerto can also ask for your ID sometimes — it’s important to have it handy.
The ADO bus can get cold — having a hoodie on hand is recommended.
Pet Policy: ADO only allows pets in the undercarriage unless they are registered service animals. Emotional support animals do not count. This is important for travelers with pets.
Where the ADO bus picks up at Cancún Airport
Know your terminal. Cancún Airport has multiple passenger terminals; ADO operates from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 (these are the ones passengers commonly use). The ADO kiosks/stalls are either inside the terminal passageway after immigration (often T3) or in the parking/bus area just outside the terminal (T2 and T4 commonly). If you don’t see a counter inside, exit and look for the kiosk/stand in the parking/bus bay area.
If you need to move between terminals (to reach a particular ADO kiosk or to catch your pre-booked departure), the airport runs a complimentary inter-terminal shuttle — it’s free and is intended for passengers moving between terminals (inside airport grounds). Wait times can be up to about 10–30 minutes depending on timing; plan for that when you’re tight on time.Cancun Airport Terminals Information
How the pickup works: ADO buses commonly perform stops at each terminal (order can vary), collecting passengers at the parking/bus bay right outside the arrivals/exits. The driver will retrieve large luggage from under the bus; small carry-ons go overhead or at your feet.
Pro tip: After clearing immigration and collecting bags, follow signs for “Buses / Transporte” or ask an airport agent for the ADO kiosk at your terminal — if you see taxi touts, ignore them and head straight to the official ADO area.
⚠️ The taxi touts will lie to you and tell you there are no more buses so that you will purchase from them, do not believe them, they are not helpful! Check bus schedules online using airport wifi.
Exactly where to buy tickets at the airport (step-by-step)
Option A — At the airport (recommended if you’re already on site and your arrival time is fixed):
Look for the ADO counter/kiosk inside the arrivals passage (commonly T3) OR the ADO stand in the parking/bus area outside T2 or T4. There’s often a small queue — plan 10–25 minutes if it’s busy.
Acceptable payment: MXN cash (preferred), major credit cards, and often USD (but change is given in MXN). Carry small bills — large USD bills may be refused.
Option B — Buy online (ADO website / ADO app): ado.com.mx
Where: ADO international site or app (international.ado.com.mx) lets you select exact origin terminal (e.g., “Aeropuerto Cancún T4”) and destination terminal (Playa Turística), pick seats and get an e-ticket with barcode. Save the PDF/QR to your phone.
When it helps: If you want a guaranteed seat in high season or on a tight schedule. BUT many travelers wait to buy until they clear immigration because flights sometimes run late and some international cards have issues when used abroad. (If you buy in advance, be sure you can show up for that exact bus time or call ADO.)
Option C — Buy from the ticket seller beside the parked bus: If the inside counter is closed, often a staff member will sell tickets where the buses park — same prices, cash/card depending on availability.
Which Playa del Carmen terminal will the bus use? (very important)
Playa del Carmen has two ADO terminals — know which one your ticket uses and pick the closest to your hotel.
Terminal Turística (main / 5th Avenue) https://maps.app.goo.gl/QfN8y6YxgnqKJjf66
Where: Quinta Avenida (5th Ave) & Avenida Juárez / near the beach and ferry to Cozumel — this is the tourist heart of Playa, one block from the shoreline and the Cozumel ferry. Best if you’re staying near 5th Ave / the beach / central hotels.
Terminal Alterna (20 Av & Calle 12) https://maps.app.goo.gl/Gfpmkfkt1TTDHwEW6
Where: 20 Avenida Norte & Calle 12 Norte — a bit inland in the downtown / residential area; less crowded and sometimes preferred by locals or those staying away from 5th Ave. Some routes (and return trips) use this station.
Important: Most airport→Playa buses usually drop at the Turística (5th Ave) stop, but some services will stop at Alterna — double-check when you buy (the ticket will show destination terminal).
Boarding & luggage: the exact process (what to expect)
Platform & boarding: Your ticket (paper or e-ticket) will show a platform/letter; if not, staff or signs at the parking area will direct you. Boarding usually begins ~10 minutes before departure; buses generally leave on time.
Checking large bags: Hand large luggage to the driver/attendant for the bus cargo hold. You’ll sometimes receive a small baggage claim tag — keep this (you must show it to reclaim your bag). For many ADO classes the first checked bag is free (but policies vary by bus class) — be cautious with very heavy items (25 kg guidance appears on many ADO docs and community reports).
Carry-on: Small backpack or personal bag goes overhead or on your lap. Do not put valuables in checked luggage. ADO is generally safe but use common sense — keep passports, electronics and cash with you.
Onboard amenities: Most ADO first-class buses have AC, reclining seats and sometimes USB/plug outlets and restroom (amenities depend on bus class — Conecta vans may be simpler).
Ticket classes and what they mean (quick)
ADO / Primera: Standard first-class coach — comfortable for airport runs.
ADO Conecta: Smaller shuttle/van service used for shorter hops — fewer amenities, but more frequent. Good for short airport runs.
ADO Platino: Premium/“business” coach — leather seats, entertainment, lounge access on some routes. Usually not necessary for Cancun → Playa (short route), but available on major intercity routes.
Price & booking specifics (realistic guidance)
Typical price range for airport → Playa: expect ~180–260 MXN one way (~$9–$14 USD). Prices flicker by season and promotions — check ADO live. Some third-party sellers show discounted fares, especially off-peak.
Buy online if: you arrive during peak season, want a guaranteed seat, or prefer a printed/e-ticket. Otherwise, buying at the airport counter works fine for most arrivals.
If your flight is late / you miss your booked bus
At the airport: go to the ADO counter and explain your flight delay — staff will usually move you to the next available departure or reissue. Keep proof of your flight arrival time (boarding pass or airline info) to assist the agent.
From Playa: if you miss your scheduled return bus to the airport, you can typically buy a new ticket at either Turística or Alterna — but expect lines in high season. Book return trips in advance if you have an early flight.
Safety & practical tips (insider level)
Keep luggage claim tag safe — you need it to collect checked bags.
If the airport ADO counter is closed, there’s often a ticket seller at the bus parking area who will sell tickets — bring cash.
Currency: ADO accepts pesos and often cards; some airport kiosks accept USD, but change will be in pesos — avoid handing a big USD bill.
Night arrivals: ADO runs late buses but frequency is lower; for arrivals after midnight double-check schedules or consider a pre-booked private transfer.
Watch your luggage during stops: occasional stories of luggage mixups or opportunistic theft when buses stop — keep an eye on cargo bay and carry valuables with you.
Accessibility (wheelchair / special needs)
ADO can accommodate passengers with special needs if arranged in advance — contact ADO at least 48 hours before travel to request wheelchair assistance or other accommodations; availability varies by bus type/route. If accessibility is essential, confirm with ADO directly.
2. Shared Shuttle
Shared shuttle vans are a middle-ground option between the budget ADO bus and a private transfer. You pay per person, but instead of a bus terminal drop-off, you get dropped off directly at your hotel or Airbnb in Playa del Carmen.
How It Works
Booking:
You must pre-book online or at airport counters (companies include USA Transfers, eTransfers, SuperShuttle, etc.).
Walk-up purchases are sometimes available at Cancún Airport, but seats may sell out, so booking in advance is safest.
Meeting Point at Cancún Airport:
After clearing customs, head outside to the arrivals area. Shared shuttles typically have uniformed reps with company logos holding clipboards or tablets.
Look for your company’s stand — most shuttles line up near designated parking lanes outside the terminal.
If you booked online, you’ll usually get a confirmation email with exact instructions and a phone number/WhatsApp to call if you can’t find your driver.
Wait Time:
Unlike a private transfer, the van won’t leave right away. You may wait 10–45 minutes while other passengers are gathered from your flight or nearby arrivals.
Vans typically carry 8–12 passengers, and you’ll be dropped off in order of hotel location (this can add travel time if you’re not first).
Travel time also depends on the number of stops, so expect up to 2 hours in heavy traffic.
Price (2025)
Around $25–35 USD per person one way from Cancún Airport → Playa del Carmen.
Round-trips are usually discounted (~$45–55 USD per person).
Prices are fixed in USD (not pesos), and you’ll pay online at booking or at the counter.
Travel Time
1.5–2 hours total, depending on how many hotel stops the van makes before reaching yours.
The actual drive airport → Playa is about 1 hour, but add buffer for waiting/loading/unloading.
Luggage Rules
Usually 1 large suitcase + 1 carry-on per person included.
Oversized luggage (surfboards, golf bags, extra suitcases) may incur a surcharge — check your shuttle company’s policy before booking.
Pros
Direct to your hotel — no extra taxi needed like with ADO.
Cheaper than a private transfer if you’re traveling solo or as a couple.
Air-conditioned vans, often with bilingual drivers.
Reliable & safe, especially if pre-booked with a reputable company.
Cons
Slower overall — you may wait at the airport, then stop at multiple hotels before reaching yours.
Not flexible on timing — you leave when the shuttle fills, not when you’re ready.
More expensive than the bus for budget travelers.
Pro Tips
Have WhatsApp handy — most companies use it to coordinate your driver if there are delays or if you can’t find your van.
If you’re staying in a gated Airbnb or off the main roads, confirm if the shuttle can reach your exact location or if you’ll be dropped at a nearby landmark.
For return trips (Playa → Cancún Airport), shuttles pick you up 3–4 hours before your flight to allow for traffic and multiple hotel pickups.
3. Private Transfer
Private Transfer (Most Comfortable & Convenient Option)
A private transfer from Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen is the easiest and most stress-free way to arrive. If you’re landing late at night, traveling with family, or carrying heavy luggage, this option is hard to beat.
How It Works
Book in AdvanceThe simplest way is to reserve online before your flight. One reliable service is High Vibez Transportation. After choosing and booking your service, you’ll usually receive a confirmation email with driver details — usually including their name, WhatsApp, license plate, and meeting instructions.
Meeting Your DriverAfter baggage claim and customs, follow signs for “Ground Transportation / Meet & Greet.” Your driver will be waiting with a sign that has your name. If your flight is delayed, most companies track your arrival time automatically.
The RideThe trip is non-stop and direct to Playa del Carmen. Many drivers speak at least basic English.
Cost & Time Estimates
Price: ~$60–$80 USD (1,100–1,500 MXN), depending on vehicle type, passengers, and luggage.
Travel Time: 45–60 minutes.
Vehicle Types: Sedan (up to 3 passengers), SUV or minivan (4–8 passengers).
Extras: Child seats often available for a small fee.
Pros:
Door-to-door with no transfers.
Perfect for late arrivals or heavy luggage.
Predictable cost and timing.
Cons:
More expensive than a shared shuttle or bus.
You bear the full time cost if traffic is bad.
Pro Tips
Screenshot your driver’s info before boarding your flight.
Most companies give you 60–90 minutes of “free wait time” — helpful if customs take longer.
Some drivers wait inside the terminal, others outside — check your email for exact instructions.
Step-by-Step Arrival
Book your transfer ahead of time (e.g. via High Vibez Transportation).
On arrival, walk to the Transfers / Meet & Greet area.
Look for your driver’s sign with your name.
Load your luggage and head directly to your hotel or Airbnb in Playa del Carmen.
4. Official Airport Taxi
If you didn’t book ahead, the official airport taxi service is the most straightforward way to get from Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen. These taxis are licensed, regulated, and available right outside the terminals — but they are one of the most expensive options.
How It Works
Find the Taxi CounterAfter you exit customs, ignore the crowd of salespeople and timeshare hawkers in the arrivals hall. Walk past them until you see the “Taxi / Transporte Oficial” counters inside the terminal. You’ll also find booths just outside near the exit doors.
Pay Before You RideFares are set by zone and passenger count. You pay in advance at the counter (cash in pesos or USD, sometimes credit card accepted). Once you pay, you’ll be given a printed receipt.
Board Your TaxiWith your receipt, head outside where the taxis are lined up. An airport staff member will direct you to your driver. The ride is direct and nonstop to Playa del Carmen.
Cost & Time Estimates
Price: ~$90–$120 USD (1,600–2,200 MXN) for a one-way trip to Playa del Carmen. Price depends on the number of passengers and terminal.
Travel Time: 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic.
Capacity: Standard sedans fit 3 passengers with luggage. Vans for larger groups cost extra.
Pros:
Always available — no need to book ahead.
Official and safe with fixed pricing.
No apps or Spanish required.
Cons:
Most expensive ground transport option.
Limited payment flexibility (some counters don’t take cards).
You may need to wait if lines are long during peak arrivals.
Pro Tips
Prices are fixed, so bargaining isn’t an option.
Keep your printed receipt until the end of your ride.
If you want to save money, compare the cost to booking a private transfer in advance — it’s often cheaper than grabbing a taxi on the spot.
Step-by-Step Arrival
After customs, walk past the salespeople until you find the official taxi counter.
Tell them your destination (Playa del Carmen).
Pay in pesos, USD, or sometimes card. Collect your printed receipt.
Exit the terminal and follow staff to your assigned taxi.
Ride directly to your hotel or Airbnb in Playa del Carmen.
5. Rideshare Apps (Uber, DiDi, inDrive)
At this time, rideshare apps do not operate in Playa del Carmen. However, they do operate in Cancún, including Cancún International Airport (CUN). That means you can sometimes use them to get from the airport down to Playa del Carmen — but once you’re in Playa, you’ll need to rely on taxis, colectivos, buses, or private transfers to get around.
Availability at Cancún Airport
Uber & Didi: Active in Cancún, but pickups from the airport can be tricky. Drivers may not pull up directly to arrivals because of conflicts with official airport taxis. Instead, you may be asked to meet them at a parking lot or departure area.
InDriver: Available but less common at the airport compared to city pickups. inDrive works on a negotiated cash fare system or bank transfer, but you need a MXN bank account.
👉 Note: Once you’ve reached Playa del Carmen, only Indriver is available the rest of the apps won’t work. You’ll have to switch to local transportation options, or use a taxi app like Radio Taxi. https://radiotaxipdc.com/
How Pickups Typically Work
Request your ride through the app.
Your driver will likely message you with a meeting point (often outside the main arrivals zone).
Walk to that location — usually a parking lot, departure level, or street just outside the airport.
For discretion, drivers may ask you to sit in the front seat so it looks less like a rideshare trip.
Cost & Time Estimates
Price Range: ~700–1,000 MXN (~$40–$55 USD) from Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen.
Travel Time: 45–60 minutes depending on traffic.
Payment Options
Uber & Didi: Card (linked to the app) or cash if enabled in your account.
InDriver: Cash only. Fare is negotiated before the ride is confirmed.
Pros:
Usually cheaper than official airport taxis.
Option to pay by card (Uber/Didi).
Good for budget travelers who don’t mind a bit of hassle.
Cons:
Not available in Playa del Carmen (only Cancún).
Pickups at the airport are inconsistent and sometimes canceled.
May involve walking with luggage to meet your driver.
Best For
Travelers who are already comfortable using rideshare apps.
Those looking for a cheaper ride from Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen.
Solo travelers or couples with light luggage who don’t mind a short walk to the pickup spot.
Pro Tips
Confirm with your driver where to meet — don’t wait at the main arrivals exit.
If you have heavy luggage, kids, or arrive late at night, a shuttle or private transfer may be a better option.
Remember: once you’re in Playa del Carmen, these apps won’t work. Plan to use taxis, colectivos, or walk locally.
6. Rental Car
Renting a car is a great option if you plan to explore beyond Playa del Carmen, visit nearby towns like Tulum or Valladolid, or take a road trip around the Yucatán Peninsula. It gives you ultimate flexibility — but comes with considerations like parking, insurance, and tolls.
For convenient booking and competitive rates, you can arrange your rental here: High Vibez Transportation.
Rental Car Options
Playa del Carmen has multiple rental car agencies — both international brands and local providers. Many offer pickup and drop-off services at airports and downtown locations.
Common rental car types include:
Economy cars (ideal for solo travelers or couples)
Compact SUVs (good for families or groups)
Full-size SUVs or vans (best for large groups or travelers with lots of luggage)
Pricing Estimates
Daily Rates: ~800–1,500 MXN/day (~$45–$85 USD), depending on vehicle type, rental length, and season.
Insurance: Usually mandatory; ~150–400 MXN/day (~$8–$22 USD).
Example: A compact SUV for three days with basic insurance might cost ~3,600 MXN (~$200 USD) plus tolls.
Where to Pick Up Your Car
If renting at Cancún Airport:
Many rental agencies have desks in the arrivals area.
Some may require a short shuttle transfer to off-site locations — check when booking.
If renting in Playa del Carmen:
Downtown locations and hotel pickups are available.
Most rental agencies require you to present your driver’s license, a credit card for deposit, and proof of insurance.
Driving in Playa del Carmen
Road Quality: Main highways and roads are well-maintained, especially in tourist areas. Rural roads may be rough or poorly lit at night.
Traffic: Can be heavy during rush hours (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM), especially on Avenida 30 and near the ferry terminal.
Parking: Limited and often paid in Playa del Carmen. Many hotels offer parking for guests — check in advance.
There’s an app for parking in Playa — the Área de Parquímetro. The app is mueveciudad.com. There are also parquímetro kiosks within walking distance of areas that require parking — e.g., in front of the deportivo and across from Los Tabernacos.
Pros:
Complete flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Access to remote beaches and attractions outside of Playa del Carmen.
Convenient for large groups or families.
Cons:
Driving in a foreign country can be stressful.
Parking can be difficult and expensive in tourist areas.
Additional costs for insurance, fuel, and tolls.
Best For
Travelers planning to explore beyond Playa del Carmen.
Families or groups with lots of luggage or special needs.
Anyone who prefers their own schedule and comfort without relying on public transport.
Pro Tips
Book in advance during high season (December–April) to secure availability and rates.
Always inspect your rental car carefully before driving off — take photos of any damage.
Keep small change handy for tolls and parking.
Familiarize yourself with local driving laws — Mexico drives on the right, seat belts are mandatory, and speed limits are strictly enforced.
